LinkMatrix offers photos from the German Federal Archive (Deutsches Bundesarchiv) which has collected over 11 million images. Only about 100.000 are scanned.
Bundesarchiv is sponsering the Wikipedia (WikiMedia) project with 100.000 images under the Creative Common License (CC-BY-SA) with a maximum resolution of 800 pixels.
Before that, the Bundesarchiv collection was hidden away in a small German city called Koblenz. Only a tiny resolution and a watermarked version was published on the Bundesarchiv website.
Usage of images was only possible if you payed a license fee to Bundesarchiv. Wikipedia is our hero: 100.000 images which you can use privately and commercially without paying a license fee.
